Mesa designs have demonstrated superior mobility characteristics when compared to the robots in its size and weight class at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Response Robot Evaluation Exercises at Texas A&M’s Disaster City. The Matilda robot has participated in all of the NIST/DHS Response Robot Evaluation Exercises since 2006 and provides a reliable, remote tele-operative robot platform to teach emergency responders about robot operation within the emerging standard test methods. Practice deployments using Matilda are also part of the responder training scenarios. NIST has used Mesa’s robots to validate over a dozen prototype test methods such as mobility, sensors, mobile manipulation, endurance and radio communications. The Matilda robot fully meets the Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Robot Technologies requirements as well.It outperformed each of the robots in its class in all categories of maneuverability:
